Today marks Transgender Day of Remembrance, on which we pause to remember those who have been targeted for hate, bullying and violence simply because of their identity.
CIJA is proud to stand with our transgender friends and family in the fight against hatred, ignorance and intolerance – all of which not only threaten minority communities, but ultimately threaten our core values as Canadians.
This November 20th, we are particularly grateful for the passage of Bill C-16, which strengthens the protections for Transgender Canadians. CIJA was proud to be a part of the Trans Equality Coalition, advocating for this crucial legislation. Jewish Canadians know firsthand how important it is for minorities to be protected from hate.
Transgender people are an indivisible part of our communities and our country. Like any at-risk minority, transgender Canadians deserve the full protection of the law, especially given that hate crimes against transgender people tend to be physically aggressive. Today, we offer our support to the transgender community – and we recommit ourselves to the defense of their dignity and human rights.
