The circumstances that necessitated Israel’s ground operation in Gaza are being misinterpreted with predictable polarity. Reporting on the recent pro-Palestinian rallies in several Canadian cities underscores the confusing contexts in which emotional opinions and actions are expressed with a blatantly anti-Semitic fervour.
The hypocritical preoccupation with “civilian Palestinian casualties,” while staying comparatively silent about hundreds of thousands of Muslim and Christian victims in Syria, Iraq and Gaza itself, plays directly into the hands of Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, Palestinian Authority, and other such ideologically motivated groups.
Israel has an undisputed right to exist in safety and security and must defend her citizens. Israel is a multi-racial, multi-religious society with equal rights for all. It conducts precision military operations with care and compassion for innocents. It assists Arabs from neighbouring countries with medical and other aid.
Israel is not an illegal occupier, nor apartheid.
The charters of both Hamas and Fatah call for the elimination of the Jewish state. Hamas relentlessly initiates hostilities in many forms and plans for a Jew-free society. It intentionally targets Israeli civilians and uses its own people as human shields. It demonstrates apartheid on several levels, including their judenrein policies and persecution against Christians.
Behind the emotion, there must be truth; otherwise, a decline into factless fanaticism is inevitable. Truth needs to shape opinion.
