Montreal, QC- The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs-Québec (CIJA-Québec) firmly condemns the publication of an antisemitic letter in the Sherbrooke daily La Tribune and calls on the editors to issue an apology to its public.
Published yesterday in the editorial pages of the daily, the only letter of the day espouses, under the pretext of criticizing Israel, vile antisemitic clichés. Its author describes the Nazi extermination camp of Auschwitz as “a lucrative Jewish propaganda business,” defends the conspiracy theory that Jews were warned of the 9/11 attacks and supports antisemitic rantings about the nefarious influence and power of the Jews.
In response, Reuben Poupko, Co-Chair of CIJA-Quebec, issued the following:
“It is shocking, intolerable and extremely disturbing that in 2018 the editors of an established daily chose to provide a platform for antisemitic conspiracy theories better suited for a neo-Nazi publications. We call on La Tribune editors to immediately apologize to its readers and to comply with Quebec journalistic standards.”
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) is the advocacy agent of the Jewish Federations of Canada-UIA.
