Press Release: CIJA: Author of death threats against Jewish children must be prosecuted to full extent of the law
October 25, 2018
Montreal, QC—Yesterday on the Journal de Montreal’s Facebook page, a user named Robert Gosselin made a number of egregiously antisemitic and bigoted comments that included an explicit threat to murder Jewish children. Montreal Police have thankfully arrested Mr. Gosselin. CIJA worked in close collaboration and will continue to work with our partners at Federation CJA and Director of Community Security, Jacques Bisson. In response to this incident, Rabbi Reuben Poupko, Co-chair of CIJA-Quebec, issued the following:
“The Jewish community is outraged that public threats of violence against the community have been posted on the Facebook page of a daily newspaper. That an explicit threat to “eliminate Jews by killing an entire school of Jewish girls” was allowed to remain on the site for 24 hours demands action. We would hope that these criminal threats will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and we are grateful to the Montreal Police for its rapid and professional response. We remain in continual contact with our partners in law enforcement and will follow this investigation closely.
“We take some comfort in the fact that many readers took Mr. Gosselin to task for his hatred demonstrating once again that the vast majority of Quebecers categorically reject bigotry and antisemitism.”
