Press Release: Hassan Guillet Doubles Down on Hateful Discourse
MONTREAL, QC – Today, Mr. Hassan Guillet held a press conference in response to the termination of his candidacy with the Liberal Party of Canada for the upcoming federal election. Guillet’s candidacy was revoked as a result of comments he had made.
“We are troubled that Mr. Guillet defended his previous statements in celebration of the release of an Islamist leader with ties to Hamas who repeatedly incited violence against Israelis and engaged in antisemitic blood libels against Jews,” said David Ouellette, Director of Research and Public Affairs at the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA). “In that same congratulatory message, Guillet referred to Israel – a UN member state and a Canadian ally – as ‘occupied Palestine’.”
“While Mr. Guillet tried to explain that he was merely critical of Israel, his previous statements include the claim that ‘Zionists control American politics’, invoking a stereotypical antisemitic conspiracy about Jews controlling governments. This type of toxic discourse does not belong in Canadian politics.”
