Press Release: CIJA’s Serious Concerns about Partisan Voting Guide Addressed by SSHRC
Ottawa, ON— Earlier today, CIJA became aware of a document entitled “Canadian Muslim Voting Guide: Federal Election 2019” that includes Pass-Fail grades for Federal Party leaders around a series of issues, including support for the antisemitic BDS movement.
CIJA was particularly concerned that this report – a hyper-partisan document – appeared to have received funding through the Government of Canada’s Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) during the pre-electoral period.
CIJA subsequently raised these concerns with the relevant Minister, leading to the launch of an investigation by the agency.
Shimon Koffler Fogel, President and CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), issued the following:
“Our initial assessment was that the report contravened the criteria by which it was awarded public funding by SSHRC. To get clarity, we engaged directly with the relevant Minister’s office.
As a result of CIJA’s intervention, SSHRC launched an investigation into what appears to be an unapproved used of funds that had been allocated for other purposes. We expect that SSHRC will conduct its investigation quickly and thoroughly, and take whatever measures are required to ensure that its policies are respected.”
