Press Release: CIJA Condemns CUPE3902 for Featuring Extremist Deemed “Danger to the Security of Canada”
Toronto, ON – Today, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 3902 will be hosting an event for university students featuring Mr. Issam Al Yamani, an individual considered a “danger to the security of Canada” by Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
According to the CBSA, Al-Yamani was involved in several activities of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), including giving the instruction to plant a TNT bomb in front of an Egyptian Airline office. Al-Yamani is currently under an enforceable removal order.
In response, Noah Shack, Vice President, GTA made the following statement:
“We cannot be silent when extremists are given a platform to promote antisemitism and other forms of hate. It is shocking that CUPE Local 3902 would host an event featuring someone facing deportation for his involvement in terrorism. If the speaker had been a white supremacist or a homophobe, Local 3902 would not have given him a platform. Why are Jews fair game?
“That the program targets university students is highly concerning, particularly at a time of rising violent extremism. We are renewing our call for the prompt removal of this individual from Canada.”
