Ottawa, ON—Upon learning of death of Keith Landy z”l, former president of the Canadian Jewish Congress, member of CIJA’s Toronto Local Partner Council, and committed lay leader dedicated to community service, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) and the Canadian Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Descendants (CJHSD) issued the following:

“We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Keith Landy z”l today. Keith was a lifelong advocate for our community who started his career as a lay leader when he joined the Canadian Jewish Congress as a young man. He went on to make a substantial contribution not just to the Jewish community, but to Canada as a whole. He will be missed.”

– David J. Cape, Chair, CIJA

“Keith was one of those rare individuals who combined boundless energy with a deep commitment to public and community service. His was recognized with a Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal and a Lincoln Alexander Award from the Law Society of Upper Canada for his distinguished commitment to advancing human rights and religious tolerance. We offer our sincere condolences to the many people he touched directly and who are mourning his loss, particularly his wife Janice, his children Michelle and Joshua, and his grandchildren. We hope they take some comfort in the knowledge that he was loved, respected, and admired. May his memory be a blessing.”

– Shimon Koffler Fogel, CEO, CIJA

Keith was a passionate advocate for Holocaust Survivors and their descendants. He lobbied the provincial government to pass the Holocaust Memorial Day Act and he worked tirelessly as a representative to the Claims Conference to secure compensation and restitution for Survivors. He was very well respected at the Claims Conference dealing with very difficult issues for the benefit of survivors. Not only did I lose a colleague at the Board at the Claims Conference to whom I personally grateful, I also lost a dear, dear friend and I will miss him very much.

– Sidney Zoltak, Co-President, Canadian Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Descendants (CJHSD)
