Montreal, QC – Today, Russell Copeman, Borough Mayor for Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grace and Lionel Perez, member of the Montreal City Council Executive Committee, denounced comments made by Jeremy Searle, Loyola District independent City Councillor, which disparaged Jewish elected officials and the broader Jewish community.
In response, Reuben Poupko, co-chair of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs-Québec (CIJA-Québec) issued the following statement:
“We commend Borough Mayor Russell Copeman and Councillor Perez for vigorously condemning offensive comments made about Jews by independent City Councillor Jeremy Searle and calling on him to apologize.
“There is no place in municipal politics, or any other arena, for discriminatory and prejudiced speech as exhibited by Mr. Searle. His behaviour is utterly unbecoming of an elected official and goes against the very foundations of the liberal democracy in which we live.”
