Montreal, QC – Last night, at the Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU) General Assembly, several members of the SSMU Board of Directors were targeted for impeachment. These members were associated with opposing antisemitism or engaging in pro-Israel activities on campus.
Yesterday’s meeting constituted a second attempt to impeach the SSMU President who had been targeted in a failed attempt at the Legislative Council on Thursday. The push to impeach her failed while three others, ousting the only Jewish member of the committee and two allies up for ratification, succeeded.
In reaction, CIJA-Quebec Co-Chair, Rabbi Reuben Poupko issued the following statement,
“That students are stigmatized and banned for their political views is sufficiently egregious but, when their very identity causes exclusion, a line has been crossed that will taint SSMU until this wrong is righted. The SSMU has undermined its own reputation. Jewish students at McGill continue to stand proud while those behind this initiative should bow their heads in shame.”
