Press Release: McGill undergraduate students vote to correct egregious targeting of Jewish students

For Immediate Release

January 19, 2018

Montreal, QC – Last Wednesday, the Student Society of McGill University (SSMU) Judicial Board ruled that the vote at the last General Assembly targeting Jewish and pro-Israel student reps was unconstitutional, requiring that approval of their nominations be deferred to the student body.

In a vote that ended last night, the students’ nominations have been approved. This means the three students in question will be confirmed in their posts as Directors.

In response, Rabbi Reuben Poupko, co-chair of CIJA-Quebec, issued the following:

“We are gratified that this egregious wrong perpetrated last October has finally been corrected. It is unfortunate that three students and their supporters had to endure this injustice and profoundly disturbing that young people were subjected to such injustice. We are grateful to the student leaders who fought to right this wrong. We hope that, in future, SSMU will embrace their own stated values, which include diversity and inclusion.”
