Because of you, the Canadian Jewish community was able to contribute to several legislative victories in 2017 that will benefit all Canadians.
The most recent, mandating a national palliative care strategy, was Bill C-277, which passed shortly before the House of Commons began its winter recess. Palliative care is an important issue that has the potential to touch every Canadian family.
For some time, CIJA has actively supported the passage of this legislation, mobilizing a broad interfaith coalition to advance that objective. With such strong endorsement from a diverse array of Canadians, it is not surprising that the bill passed with unanimous support.
While the legalization of physician-assisted dying met with a great deal of controversy, one important policy consideration that emerged from that debate was a clear consensus that end-of-life options must include palliative care.
Unfortunately, high-quality palliative care is available to fewer than 30% of Canadians. This shortfall has the potential, given Canada’s aging population, to touch all of us.
The passage of Bill C-277 was a significant milestone, but there is still much work to do.
You can help ensure the process initiated by Bill C-277 is productive and impactful and that the national strategy that emerges from it has the maximum impact on end-of-life care for all Canadians.
Working with others, CIJA will convene an expert working group to provide advice and proposals for concrete measures the government can take. But that is just one variable in the equation.
We need your personal stories.
Do you have a loved one who received high-quality palliative care at the end of their life?
Do you have a loved one among the 70% of Canadians without access?
Do you have other thoughts you would like to share on this important issue?
Please take a few moments to share those thoughts with us by clicking here.
Your input and personal experience will be invaluable as we continue to push for progress toward improved access to palliative care for all Canadians.
