Ottawa, ON – Today marks the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Balfour Declaration, which declared the support of the British government for the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in the Land of Israel. The declaration was signed at a time of growing international support for a Jewish renaissance in the historic Jewish homeland.
In response, Shimon Koffler Fogel, CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) said:
“CIJA joins Jewish Canadians, Israelis, and Jews worldwide in commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration. As we reflect on this momentous event, it is vital to remember that it was one milestone among many that confirm the moral, historic, and legal right of the Jewish people to self-determination in our ancestral land.
“Just as many states endorsed the Balfour Declaration at the time, the international community’s support for the national liberation of the Jewish people after centuries of exile has been expressed time and again. Later this month we will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the UN partition resolution of 1947, which expressly called for the creation of a Jewish state.
“CIJA will continue working to build support for the people of Israel, rooted in the democratic values shared by Canada and Israel and a clear understanding of these historic events.”
