Ottawa, ON – Yesterday, the New Democratic Party of Canada elected Jagmeet Singh as its new leader.
In response, David J. Cape, Chair of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), issued the following statement:
“We congratulate Jagmeet Singh on winning the leadership of the New Democratic Party of Canada. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Mr. Singh and the NDP team as the party enters this exciting new chapter.
“CIJA has engaged Mr. Singh on various issues of importance to Jewish Canadians. We appreciate his consistent willingness to connect with the Jewish community in a cooperative spirit, as well as the energy and passion he brings to elected office.
“We reaffirm our gratitude to outgoing leader Tom Mulcair. Just weeks ago, CIJA was honoured to convene a meeting of Jewish community activists with Mr. Mulcair, who again demonstrated his significant knowledge of and support for Canadian Jewry. We wish him success in all his future endeavours.
“Canada’s democracy depends on the dedication of those who make immense personal sacrifices for the cause of public service. We thank all those who put their names forward to serve as leader of the NDP, and commend their commitment to our great country.”
