Montreal, QC – Yesterday, the Green Party of Canada (GPC) released the text of a new anti-Israel resolution to replace the one that was passed at the party’s convention in August.
The text of the new resolution is anti-Israel and suggests that Palestinians have no role or responsibility in advancing the peace process. The resolution maintains the party’s support for economic sanctions against Israelis and calls on Canada to exclusively pressure Israel. It also issues various demands of Israel alone which suggests a failure to recognize that peace is the responsibility of both parties and can only be achieved through direct negotiations.
In the announcement that accompanied the resolution, the GPC stated that Party Leader Elizabeth May, the party’s Shadow Cabinet, and Dimitri Lascaris – the sponsor of the original resolution – all support the new text.
In response, David J. Cape, Chair of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), issued the following statement:
“We are appalled that the Green Party’s leadership would propose such a divisive policy that is hostile towards Israelis and riddled with egregious historic distortions. Among many examples, perhaps most outrageous is the suggestion that the Jewish people have no ancestral or indigenous roots in Israel.
“This issue has been a test for the electability and responsibility of the Green Party of Canada, one that Elizabeth May and the party’s leadership have failed terribly. This decision is a particularly reckless flip-flop by May, given her previous unequivocal statements against boycotts. In crafting a policy that is both anti-Israel and counter-productive to peace, the GPC has effectively shut its doors to mainstream Jewish Canadians and signaled to all voters that it’s not ready for the serious business of policymaking.
“We are encouraged by those Greens who have spoken out against this initiative and identified the damage anti-Israel voices within the party have inflicted on the GPC’s own agenda. Indeed, it is clear the GPC has been targeted as a platform for fringe activists who have found their cause rejected by the mainstream parties. We will continue working with our allies within the GPC in the hope that they will be successful in reversing this shameful resolution.”
